Accessibility

Accessible manuscripts and interfaces are publication requirements, and barriers can be reported.

Policies Accessibility

The Series treats accessibility as part of editorial preparation and public access. Its current target for web pages and newly prepared documents is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Automated checks alone do not establish conformance, and the Series does not claim that every current or historical PDF has been fully verified.

Requirements for submitted manuscripts

Authors must provide an editable source file that can be remediated. Manuscripts should include:

  • real Microsoft Word heading styles in a logical order;
  • descriptive link text rather than raw or ambiguous link labels;
  • concise alternative text for substantive figures and images;
  • table header rows and a logical reading order;
  • editable tables and equations instead of screenshots when usable editable alternatives are available;
  • sufficient color contrast without relying on color alone to communicate meaning;
  • selectable text;
  • figure and table numbers, captions, and in-text references;
  • abbreviations defined at first use;
  • meaningful document language and metadata; and
  • an accessible PDF export checked with both automated tools and manual review.

The editable source must be retained in the authorized private system so accessibility problems can be corrected without reconstructing the paper from a PDF.

Editorial accessibility check

Before publication, the Series checks document structure, reading order, link purpose, alternative text, tables, contrast, selectable text, keyboard use, and common screen-reader barriers in proportion to the paper’s content. A paper may be returned for remediation when a barrier would prevent meaningful use.

Accessibility review does not guarantee that every assistive-technology combination will behave identically. Specialized equations, complex tables, maps, or historical files may require additional review or an alternative format.

Report a barrier or request an alternative

Use the Contact page and include:

  • the paper title and URL;
  • the page, figure, table, link, or control involved;
  • the barrier encountered;
  • the format or assistance that would be useful; and
  • a relevant deadline, if any.

Do not include medical documentation or unnecessary sensitive personal information in the initial email. The Series will acknowledge the request, identify the responsible channel, and coordinate remediation or an alternative when the requested change is within its control. Timing depends on the file, barrier, author/source availability, and any OAsis coordination; no fixed completion time is promised.

Corrections and repository files

An accessibility- or formatting-only PDF replacement requires Managing Editor and author approval and verification that the scholarly content did not change. A deposited file must be coordinated with OAsis. The public record receives an accessibility or version note when the file change affects readers or citation.

A substantive remediation that changes interpretation, analysis, or conclusions follows the Corrections, Revisions & Versioning policy instead.

OAsis is a separate repository service with its own accessibility statement. Report a repository-interface or repository-file barrier to the Series so the correct responsibility and record can be coordinated.

Historical material

Historical records are reviewed individually for provenance, rights, final-version status, and accessibility. A metadata-only record may remain available while full text is missing or unverified. The site must not imply that an inaccessible or missing historical file is an accessible downloadable paper.
